As the weather cools and leaves turn, or maybe even a few weeks before, your living room is the perfect place to add a touch of autumn charm. One of the simplest and most cost effective ways to do that? Fresh throw pillow combinations! This season, I'm highlighting four cozy combos that blend floral prints, rich textures, and solid tones to create a warm and welcoming vibe.
The best thing about throw pillows is that you can simply buy a standard sized insert like these here and rotate them per season or easily change your color scheme when things start feeling a little stale.
When it comes to colors in our home, we always tend towards neutral color schemes with small pops of color. For example, our couches are a simple beige or very light taupe color, curtains are similar, and we usually add accents through hardware or wooden furniture to bring a little warmness into the room. But this year I'm leaning into some of the bolder (but still a neutral balance) tones of Fall, and to help decide which throw pillow combination we're going to go with, I had to see them all together visually.
1. Brick: Warm Reds & Terracotta
This palette feels like sitting by the fireplace with a cup of cider. Think the viral terracotta pumpkins, the rich rusty red color of the leaves changing, and a clean, crisp morning.
Mix:
Together, they create a cozy, layered look that brings warmth to your space.
2. Coffee: Deep Browns & Soft Caramels
Inspired by that perfect caramel color of a coffee at home, this combination layers warm browns and caramels with creamy accents. Start with a low contrast floral pillow featuring camel and cream tones, and layer with a rich and solid caramel linen pillow, then take it one more level darker with a deep brown pillow with a geometric design. My favorites are these edgy-meets-cozy covers available in so many colors (and I have multiple throughout the house).
Mix:
Perfect for neutral lovers who still want depth, warmth, and coziness.
3. Olive Grove: Muted Greens & Grays
Bring the outdoors in with soothing green and gray tones. If you're looking for a throw pillow combination that will last through Fall and Winter, this is the one. The pine green gives rich, moody tones perfect for all those Halloween movie nights, then pairs perfectly with your Christmas garland in just a few short months.
Mix:
Ideal for a natural, relaxed fall vibe that transitions beautifully into winter.
4. Harvest Wheat: Soft Linens & Natural Browns
For a lighter, rustic look, blend soft neutrals and earthy browns. Choose a natural linen solid as the anchor of your combination, then pair with a simple caramel or camel colored geometric style pillow (plaid or similar), and finally finish with high contrast textured pattern like this Vintage Floral Linen Cover set in dark brown and ivory.
Mix:
This combination feels effortlessly elegant and timeless, perfect for those who love subtle fall decor.
Easy Styling Tips:
Mix different sizes: layer larger square pillows at the back and smaller ones in front.
Use odd numbers (three or five pillows) for a casual, curated look.
Don’t be afraid to combine modern prints with classic florals; it adds interest and personality.
